This week we have had some Republican primary candidates in the 2024 election really speak out on their competitors and the state of the Republican Party.

For instance, former Vice President Mike Pence called for Republicans to shy away from “populist” policies. Speaking at New England College during a “SiriusXM Town Hall,” Pence called for Americans to stay true to conservative policies.

But, Pence also went on the attack, warning that other candidates, including former President Donald Trump, are exchanging conservatism for populism.

Meanwhile, former United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley is also going on the attack against other candidates. But her targets are set on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy.

In a memo issued to donors this week, Haley’s team asserts that she is “the only candidate who can beat Trump and Biden.” Her team says that Haley “is blazing her own path” while others are trying to just copy Trump. The memo reads:

Ron DeSantis and Vivek Ramaswamy fall all over themselves to copy Trump on everything from policy to his leadership style. From DeSantis’s ‘territorial dispute’ comments to, well, everything about Ramaswamy, both seem to think copying Trump is the path to success. …Some run as “Trump-lite,” while others throw rocks at Trump to win points in the media. All are wrong, all will fail, and all show a lack of leadership.”

The memo also mentions how Haley is faring well in the polls. For example, a new poll from NMB Research placed her in a tie for second with DeSantis. Trump is still leading in most of these polling numbers, but Haley’s team notes that there is a majority of Republicans who “are actively looking for someone else to support.”

And while Republicans are taking jabs at one another, a group of U.S. Presidential Foundations and Centers is calling for civility in discourse surrounding the upcoming election.

For the first time, a group of 13 of these institutions – as far back as the Hoover Foundation and as recent as the Obama Presidential Center – issued a joint statement calling for a reaffirmation in “democratic values, civic responsibility, civility, and a pluralistic society.” Part of the statement reads:

Our elected officials must lead by example and govern effectively in ways that deliver for the American people. This, in turn, will help to restore trust in public service. The rest of us must engage in civil dialogue; respect democratic institutions and rights; uphold safe, secure, and accessible elections; and contribute to local, state, or national improvement.
