Congress has until Saturday night to pass a deal and avoid a government shutdown; but with lawmakers at an impasse, it seems a shutdown is all but inevitable.
The Senate is pushing its bipartisan continuing resolution to keep the government funded until Nov. 17 along with billions in funding for Ukraine.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has vowed to block the measure as party hardliners like Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz – who has been threatening McCarthy’s removal – continue to urge the speaker not to cut any deal with Democrats.
McCarthy was hoping to push a stopgap of his own, one tied to border security, but that failed to pass Friday afternoon by a 232-198 vote with 21 Republicans joining every Democrat in voting against the measure.
