About a year and a half since the Canadian Trucker convoy took Ottawa by storm, demanding the end to vaccine mandates and COVID lockdowns, the convoy’s leaders are now standing trial.

The trials of Tamara Lich and Chris Barber, who are charged in connection to organizing the weekslong protest in early 2022, began Tuesday.

The protest brought traffic to a halt and frustrated local residents as truckers continually sounded their horns. It was ultimately brought to an end with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoking emergency powers – resulting in dozens of arrests and even the freezing of protestors’ bank accounts.

According to CBC, Lich and Barber are accused of mischief, obstructing police, counseling others to commit mischief and intimidation.

The trial is expected to last at least 16 days. Their lawyers say the question of the case “will be whether the actions of two of the organizers of a peaceful protest should warrant criminal sanction.”
