A federal appeals court handed down a major win to conservatives Thursday.

The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals is allowing the states of Tennessee and Kentucky to ban transgender treatments for minors, rejecting a request to allow the treatments to continue while legal challenges play out in court. In the 2-1 majority opinion, the court said the issue is not something judges should weigh in on “without a clear warrant in the Constitution.”

The attorneys general in both states are praising the ruling, with Tennessee AG Jonathan Skrmetti calling it a big win for children and democracy.

It marks a major blow to the American Civil Liberties Union, which is challenging both state laws. But the ACLU has promised to continue the fight, even if that means taking its challenge all the way to the Supreme Court.
