With COVID-19 in the rear window, the State Department and U.S. Health Department jointly announced a new global health bureau Tuesday. Secretary of State Antony Blinken made the announcement with a chilling certainty of another pandemic.
It’s called the Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy, and it will focus on international health policies to prevent and cure diseases. But the bureau also merges several public health, biodefense, and scientific arms of the State Department.
John Nkengasong, the new bureau’s head, says he will improve cooperation among global partners. His focus will be infectious diseases like malaria, the Zika virus, and AIDS.
