Ukrainian authorities have arrested a woman they say tried to assassinate President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The country’s intelligence and security agency says the woman was an “informant of Russian intelligence.” Notably, she attempted to gather intelligence on Zelenskyy’s recent visit to the Mykolaiv region. She tried to find out which roads he would travel and when.
But the agency, which functions like our FBI, says they detected the activity of the former saleswoman and took extra security measures.
They then monitored the woman, who they say attempted to identify ammo depots and jamming equipment within the region. Allegedly, these were Russian targets for a massive air strike.
But Ukrainian officials caught the woman attempting to pass intelligence “red-handed” and arrested her on Aug. 1. The anonymous defendant now faces up to 12 years in prison for trying to share sensitive military information.
