Chaos continues in Niger and the United States is issuing a partial evacuation of its embassy.
The State Department said Wednesday that all non-emergency U.S. government personnel and their families must leave the country.
The announcement comes after militants seized power in a stunning coup last week. France and Italy are evacuating European citizens out of the country.
The Biden administration has previously faced criticism for its failure to evacuate American citizens from dangerous situations, including Afghanistan in 2021 and Sudan earlier this year.
Already, some Americans are struggling to escape. A Texas mission group recently found itself stranded after the coup. Thirteen members of Harmony Hill Baptist Church in Lufkin, Texas, eventually got a spot on an Italian evacuation flight thanks to the help of several U.S. officials. The church specially thanked Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. Pete Sessions, along with Lufkin Mayor Mark Hicks.
