Tuesday, the social media giant Meta announced it would end news sharing on its platforms in Canada.

The change was made in response to the Canadian Online News Act, which requires platforms to pay publishers when their news articles receive clicks. Meta representatives have argued that news providers, and not social media platforms, benefit when news is shared.

On the other hand, liberal lawmakers argue that the law will ultimately benefit news outlets who have their content shared on social media without any compensation.

Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the outcome.
