The blame game is afoot over the Maui Wildfires.

Maui County is currently suing Hawaii’s electric utility, Hawaiian Electric, claiming it failed to shut off power despite high winds and dry conditions. But Hawaiian Electric is now pushing back.

On Sunday, the company acknowledged a downed powerline did start a fire on the morning of Aug. 8, but said power was shut down soon after.

The company ultimately blames firefighters for declaring the fire contained and leaving the scene before a second fire sparked nearby. That fire went on to become the deadly inferno that killed at least 115 people.

Hawaiian Electric says the cause of that second fire is still unknown and called the county’s lawsuit “factually and legally irresponsible.”

A lawyer working on behalf of the county accused Hawaiian Electric of trying “to shift liability and total responsibility.”
