A former Liberty University president is now suing the school he once led, arguing that the university is committing trademark infringement.

Jerry Falwell Jr. claims that Liberty is using the name and image of Falwell Sr., who founded the university, without consulting the family. This includes a custom font the school created based on the late evangelist’s handwriting, and a hologram based on his likeness.

Falwell Jr. says that a family trust holds the trademark to his father’s name, intellectual property, and likeness, and that the school used these without permission.

But this is only the latest of legal struggles between the school and its former president.

The university is still recovering from the scandals that forced Falwell Jr. out of leadership in 2020. A spokesman for the school said that it is “confident it will ultimately prevail in this case.”
