The Biden administration is bypassing U.S. law in order to send controversial cluster munitions to Ukraine.

The bombs, which are known to cause civilian deaths and banned in 100 countries, detonate in a central area, simultaneously releasing up to a hundred smaller bombs over a wide area. These bomblets are meant to detonate near enemy tanks and forces, but sometimes they fail to explode on impact. They can go off at random, killing civilians in the blast even after the fighting has ended.

Russia’s use of cluster bombs in Ukraine sparked international outrage and accusations of war crimes. The Pentagon is expected to announce the new $800 million package today.

Meanwhile, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prighozin may be back in Russia after the attempted military coup, and now supporters of the mercenary group are calling for a mass gathering Saturday in St Petersburg as a show of solidarity with Prigozhin.
