Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is back from her China trip, which she described as successful. But that success may ultimately cause the U.S. to backtrack on sanctions meant to protect national security.
While nothing about escalating trade restrictions between the countries has yet been resolved, Yellen said Sunday that Washington will listen to Chinese complaints.
Washington’s crackdown on the supply of computer chips from China is one cause of friction with Beijing. China says this cripples fledgling industries.
But the treasury secretary did say the U.S. cannot compromise on national security. That includes advanced technology with valuable military applications. She also says that the U.S. narrowly tailors their sanctions for this purpose.
This jab appears to be aimed at China’s recent restriction on the export of two precious metals needed for technology production.
