A new digital currency is on the market, but some might find it a bit invasive.
OpenAI CEO and ChatGPT creator Sam Altman launched Worldcoin Monday. To sign up, you’ll have to first create a World ID with a real life iris scan. Eliza Gkritsi, senior reporter at CoinDesk, explained how it works.
The ambitious digital currency is the culmination of a three-year program aimed at distinguishing humans from AI online. Altman is a proponent of Universal Basic Income and says his World ID would reduce fraud should it ever be implemented.
Despite being described as a “new global digital current,” it has a long way to go to live up to the name. Worldcoin is currently available in only 20 countries, and is not available in the U.S.
