Thursday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi finally broke his silence on ethnic violence in Manipur. Modi responded to a shocking video showing a mob sexually assaulting two women, saying that “the guilty will not be spared.”
The video, taken in May, appeared on social media late Wednesday night, sparking outrage. Massive protests are now breaking out in Manipur as a result. The women in the video were identified as members of Manipur’s predominantly Christian Kuki-Zo minority.
Anti-Christian violence in the northeastern Indian state is among the worst in the country under Modi’s stringent anti-conversion laws. More than 100 people were killed and 400 churches destroyed in the past two months.
The New-Delhi based United Christian Forum reported earlier this month that attacks against Christians by have nearly doubled in the past year.
