Hunter Biden’s longtime business partner Devon Archer appeared before Congress Monday.

In a closed session of the House Oversight Committee, the key witness gave testimony that was unquestionably damaging to the younger Biden, but Republicans and Democrats were split on whether or not this testimony tied the elder Biden to wrongdoing.

Specifically, Archer testified that Hunter Biden traded on the “illusion” of access to his father. CNN reported after the testimony that Archer meant his remark to mean access to Washington, D.C., as a whole, not Joe Biden specifically and cited Rep.  Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.) as having indicated Archer’s testimony absolved the president.

“The witness was very consistent that none of those conversations ever had to do with any business dealings or transactions,” Goldman said.

However,  Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chair of the Oversight Committee, offered a much different description of Archer’s remarks.

“Devon Archer’s testimony today confirms Joe Biden lied to the American people when he said he had no knowledge about his son’s business dealings and was not involved,” Comer said in a statement. “Joe Biden was ‘the brand’ that his son sold around the world to enrich the Biden family.”

Comer added, “Why did Joe Biden lie to the American people about his family’s business dealings and his involvement? It begs the question what else he is hiding from the American people. The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability will continue to follow the Bidens’ money trail and interview witnesses to determine whether foreign actors targeted the Bidens, President Biden is compromised and corrupt, and our national security is threatened.”

I the same statement, Comer outlined seven key takeaways from Archer’s testimony.

Archer arrived around 10:20 AM, brushing off reporter questions as he entered for the closed-door session.

The former Burisma board member had been expected to tell that the then-Vice President met with dozens of Hunter’s business associates. Joe Biden denies any business relationship with his son.

But Republicans are also accusing the Justice Department of intimidating their witness.

Archer was convicted of unrelated fraud charges in 2018. He’s since walked free during a lengthy appeals process. But on Saturday, Manhattan federal prosecutors asked the judge to schedule a jail date. They later clarified that they meant after today’s testimony.

Comer said finds the timing suspicious.
