The victim count from a doomsday cult in Kenya continues to rise.

Cult defectors say that they were told to “crucify themselves” through starvation until they met Jesus. Cult leader Paul Mackenzie was initially arrested back in April, but authorities are still working to recover victims on the property.

They exhumed 12 more bodies on Monday, bringing the total to 403. But there are a total of 613 who loved ones reported missing to Red Cross officers.

The leader moved to an 800-acre property in Shakahola back in 2019, which he marketed as a sanctuary from the end times. But Mackenzie denies that he ordered anyone to starve themselves. He is currently held in police custody along with 36 other suspects.

The Shakahola massacre may have a far-reaching effect on freedom of religion in the country, as it sparks debates on if there should be limits placed on that freedom.

Meanwhile, President William Ruto says he will crackdown on “those using religion to push their heinous acts.”
