Indiana won its right to protect babies from abortion over the weekend.

In a 3-2 decision, the state’s Supreme Court ruled that the state’s near-total abortion ban is legal and does not violate the state constitution.

The one exception the justices found was a situation when the life of the mother is in danger. But the original law, like all other pro-life state laws, already allowed for abortion in this case.

Indiana’s Attorney General’s Office celebrated the ruling, saying it was “long in coming, but morally justified.”
The ruling strikes down a lower court injunction against the law, which may now come into effect as soon as August. But justices did not set a date, instead returning the case to a lower court for further action.

When it does come into effect, all abortions will be banned except for a few narrow exceptions. There were more than 7,700 abortions within the state in 2020, according to government data.
