House Republicans are issuing an ultimatum to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy over next year’s budget.
Monday, a group of 21 Republicans sent a letter to the speaker threatening to block any appropriations bills that don’t have major budget cuts.
Specifically, they will vote against any bill “designed to achieve” a top-line spending level roughly equal to McCarthy’s recent debt ceiling deal with President Joe Biden.
In addition, the Republicans want McCarthy to oppose any supplemental funding of Ukraine. This comes after a group of Republican hard liners temporarily shut down the House floor last month in protest of the debt ceiling deal.
Congress has until Sept. 30 to pass a budget and avoid a government shutdown.
