In some rather sad news, this year marks the largest amount of deadly mass shootings since 2006, according to the Associated Press.
From January to June, the nation witnessed 28 mass killings, resulting in 140 victims. According to Northeastern University, these numbers are staggering compared to previous years. But the 2023 trend doesn’t mean it’s here to stay.
Dr. Amy Barnhorst, a psychiatrist at U.C. Davis, said that the second half of 2023 may see calmer days, but she couldn’t predict for sure.
Meanwhile, AP reports that despite the headlines, mass shootings are still statistically rare and represent only a fraction of the country’s overall gun violence.
