On Thursday, the FDA approved the nation’s first over-the-counter birth control pill as the fight over abortions continues in states across the country.

The newly approved drug is known as Opill and is sold by Perrigo. Opill was first approved as a prescription in 1973 – ironically the same year that the Roe v. Wade decision was issued. With this new approval from the FDA, however, patients will not need a healthcare provider in order to acquire the drug.

The Biden administration is hailing the decision as a means for access to “essential healthcare.” Some groups have expressed concern over the pill’s potential side effects, which can include abnormal bleeding, ovarian cysts, and depression. The FDA notes in their statement on the approval that the drug should be taken “as directed.”

This move will complicate the issue of abortion laws in many states that have outlawed the procedure after a certain point in the pregnancy.
