Arkansas librarians are in the clear for now, as a state judge just blocked a law criminalizing librarians and booksellers for providing “harmful” materials to minors.
The measure was signed earlier this year and set to take effect Tuesday, but U.S. District Judge Timothy L Brooks issued a stay. Importantly, Brooks did not dismiss the case.
The law would also create a new process to challenge library materials and request that they be relocated to areas not accessible to children.
Local librarians are calling the law redundant, and subjective in its definition of “obscene.”
Arkansas Attorney General Tim Griffin responded to the ruling saying, “we are reviewing the judge’s opinion and will continue to vigorously defend the law.”
