It was a controversial weekend at the White House after President Joe Biden announced that protecting LGBT rights is a “top priority” for his administration.
His comments came during Saturday’s Pride Month picnic – the largest pride event ever held at the White House. Ahead of the picnic, the White House announced new measures to counter laws passed in Republican-led states barring sex-change procedures on minors.
The White House also announced that the Department of Education will hire a new coordinator to “address the growing threat that book bans pose for the civil rights of students.” This comes as several Republican states, such as Florida, are removing age-inappropriate books, some of which feature graphic pictures from school or lurid descriptions of sex acts, from school libraries.
Meanwhile, the administration is facing backlash for displaying a pride flag between the main pillars of the White House. President Biden tweeted out a picture of the flag, saying “America is a nation of pride.”
