At least five deaths are being blamed on deadly southern storms that left hundreds of thousands without power Sunday.

The severe weather was triggered by a triple-digit heat wave that continues to stretch across the southern U.S., from Texas to Louisiana.

The National Weather Service issued several warnings which are in place until Wednesday. These include excessive rainfall and sever thunderstorm warnings in certain areas of the South and Southeast; excessive heat warnings and advisories from Texas to Louisiana; and a critical fire weather risk for Arizona and New Mexico.

A combination of a southern jet stream and warm waters in the Gulf of Mexico is contributing to a more humid heat than usual, upping the danger and discomfort for those in the affected areas.
