Tennessee Republicans’ hope to end childhood transgender treatments were delayed Wednesday when a federal judge put a partial pause on a recently passed state law set to go into effect on July 1.

The temporary injunction overrides the state’s ban on giving cross-sex hormones and puberty blockers to minors.

U.S. District Judge Eli Richardson said the ban likely infringes on the U.S. Constitution. But the statewide ban on childhood gender surgery still remains in place.

The bill’s author, Tennessee House Majority Leader William Lamberth, reacted to the ruling, accusing the court of normalizing “a dangerous ideology that promotes the abuse and chemical castration of healthy young people.” Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti plans to appeal the decision.

Tennessee is part of a growing list of Republican states where laws protecting kids from cross-sex hormones have been blocked by the courts. Wednesday, a judge blocked a similar law in Kentucky, mirroring the actions of other judges in Florida, Indiana, and Arkansas.
