Presidential Hopeful Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) appeared on “The View” Monday and challenged the idea of systemic racism in America.

Scott pointed to the prominence of black politicians and media figures, as well as falling unemployment rates among African Americans, as proof that the U.S. is not systematically racist.

From there the discussion turned to the culture wars. Scott was booed while discussing Florida’s ongoing dispute with Disney, a move that drew a rebuke to the audience from co-host Whoopi Goldberg.

While the studio audience was decidedly against Scott, the conservative media sphere and social media was far more forgiving. Scott received generally favorable responses to his appearance.

Scott’s best-received remark, at least in terms of the conservative audience was in response to co-host Sunny Hostin’s suggestion that Scott was the “exception” in an otherwise racist nation.

“That is a dangerous, offensive, disgusting message to send to our young people today that the only way to succeed is by being the exception,” Scott responded.
