Texas is taking new steps to stem the flow of illegal immigrants.

Gov. Greg Abbott has approved the deployment of a floating barrier in the Rio Grande, a 1,000-foot blockade that will be made of large buoys strung together with a steel cable.

Within the next few weeks, it will be set up along part of the river between Piedras Negras, Mexico, and Eagle Pass, Texas. The stretch of river has seen a surge of illegal crossings since Title 42 ended last month.

In addition, Abbott also signed six border bills Thursday. Among them is legislation that designates Mexican drug cartels as Foreign Terrorist Organizations. Other measures expand law enforcement resources and interstate security efforts to address the crisis.
