Hunter Biden will not likely face any serious repercussions for his pending guilty plea and diversionary program, but Republicans think his slap-on-the-wrist treatment might ultimately prove more damaging to his father’s reelection campaign.
Earlier this week, it became known that the presidential son would plead guilty to a pair of misdemeanor tax offenses to avoid jail time, trial, or potential felony conviction for having failed to pay taxes for at least two years. This plea will also result in Hunter being given a list of conditions that, if followed, will lead to the dropping of a federal weapons charge.
The news was met with silence and dodges on the left – President Joe Biden has stated only that he is proud of his son – and anger on the right.
“Outside the Supreme Court, there’s a statue of Lady Justice wearing a blindfold and holding a scale that is supposed to be equal” House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said. “When it comes to Hunter Biden, it doesn’t seem like Justice was really blindfolded and equal.”

Thursday, anger turned to action as the House Ways and Means Committee voted to release whistleblower testimony from two IRS employees who say the IRS and FBI engaged in misconduct during the investigation, which will end assuming the guilty plea is accepted when Hunter appears in court Monday.
“The American people deserve to know that when it comes to criminal enforcement, they are not on the same playing field as the wealthy and politically connected class,” Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith (R-Mo.) said in a statement. “The preferential treatment Hunter Biden received would never have been granted to ordinary Americans.
“Whistleblowers describe how the Biden Justice Department intervened and overstepped in a campaign to protect the son of Joe Biden by delaying, divulging, and denying an ongoing investigation into Hunter Biden’s alleged tax crimes.”

Smith said the whistleblower testimony shows that the Justice Department took numerous steps to delay and limit the investigation into Hunter and eventually denied requests from a U.S. attorney to bring charges against the younger Biden.
“IRS employees who blew the whistle on this abuse were retaliated against … They were removed from this investigation after they responsibly worked through the chain of command to raise these concerns,” Smith said.
POSTER CHILD FOR TWO-TIER SYSTEM
In agreeing to a plea deal, the Justice Department might have played into the hands of Republicans, who now have a prominent example to which they can point as evidence that the Biden Justice Department is a political tool being wielded by the left.
A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll suggests conservatives are wise to go all-in on this effort. About half of respondents to the poll, including 75% or Republicans and 33% of Democrats, said they believed Hunter Biden had received preferential treatment.
Importantly, few respondents indicated their vote in 2024 would be impacted by the plea deal.
However, even beyond political pragmatics, conservatives have been given an opportunity to stand upon the ethos of traditional American values while also scoring points against a Democratic Party that is suddenly quite comfortable with a well-to-do and well-connected person being treated with kid gloves when everyday Americans would be unlikely to receive the same.
Americans, for all the talk of being split, share substantially more in common than legacy media and divisive forces would have them believe. Among those traits is a general desire for fair play, an aspiration for equal rights and responsibilities long ingrained in the nation’s laws.
In the past, Democrats have made considerable political gains by stating a commitment to fostering a justice system in which the rich and the poor, the connected and the thoroughly common, receive the same protections but also the same consequences.
“Democrats are the party of criminal justice reform, right?” Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) tweeted. “Where’s their outrage now while Hunter Biden, the white, privileged son of a President gets a slap on the wrist for a gun charge and tax evasion? Crickets.”

Hunt, who is black, has been particularly vexed by Democrats’ sudden embrace of pay-to-play justice.
“The American people are sick and tired of this two-tiered justice system and as a black man I’m tired of seeing this kind of discretion you use to favor people like Hunter Biden because he’s white and a son of a president,” Hunt told special investigator John Durham during the latter’s appearance on Capitol Hill. “While Hunter Biden will serve no jail time for these charges black men across this country are imprisoned for years for the exact same crimes and I’m not surprised.”

Fox News personality Jesse Waters said Democrats and the (presumably left-leaning) media are guilty of negligence for having ignored the details of the Hunter Biden case.
“You can’t find a crime if you don’t crack open the laptop and don’t see the texts, e-mails and photos, and if you ignore the bank records, the bribery allegations and half-a-dozen whistleblowers … and also, if you don’t have any common sense,” Waters said during a monologue Thursday night. “The media is like a detective in Miami who can’t find cocaine. The Democrats want to keep everything locked up in an evidence locker where nobody can see it. They don’t even want to hear about the evidence.”
Waters later added, “since the only thing Democrats are good at [is] public relations, Hunter Biden is now a hero. Democrats live in a world where Hunter was just an addict with bad luck.”
TRUMP CASES LOOM LARGE
Conservatives have spent much of the past several days wondering why Hunter Biden was receiving such tame treatment while former President Donald Trump faces criminal and civil charges at all levels.
“If you’re Biden’s leading political opponent, the DOJ will try to put you in prison,” McCarthy said earlier in the week. “If you’re Biden’s son, the DOJ will give you a sweetheart deal.”
Hunt, who also defended Trump, wondered why the same party that says Trump must be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law is okay with Hunter not only receiving a likely light sentence, but also having allegedly benefited from government apparatchiks running interference.
“No one is above the law!” Hunt tweeted along with breaking news of the whistleblower allegations. “Meanwhile back at the ranch …”

For his part, former President Trump has been on Truth Social sharing (re-Truthing) various items related to the whistleblower allegations while also using news of the Hunter plea deal to springboard into complaints about the ways his various investigations have been handled.
“A ‘sweetheart’” deal for Hunter (and Joe), as they continue their quest to “get” Trump, Joe’s political opponent,” Trump wrote on Truth Social Tuesday. “We are now a third world country!”
Trump has referred to the nation as either a third-world country, banana republic, or other similar term on numerous occasions dating to his first criminal indictment.
