It is now believed that a general with advanced knowledge of last week’s attempted coup has been detained by Russian authorities.
On Thursday, Kremlin officials refused to discuss the whereabouts of Gen. Sergei Surovikin, who has reportedly been missing for days.
Earlier this week, U.S. military intelligence confirmed it believed Surovikin had advanced knowledge of the attempted coup by Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin. According to intelligence officials, the United States is currently probing whether or not Surovikin conspired with Prigozhin earlier this year.
Local reports have stated that Surovikin was arrested by security forces. His family has reportedly not seen him in days, and his security detail has not been responsive to inquiries.
Russian political consultant Sergei Markov wrote in a social media post that Surovikin is currently being interrogated. He said “a massive investigation has begun. Hundreds of investigators are certainly involved in it and thousands of people will be interrogated.”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has denied that the administration is aware of Surovikin’s location.
