A Maryland church is still recovering from a violent attack that occurred earlier this month, reportedly causingĀ  more than $100,000 in damage.

Parishioners at the predominantly African American Fowler United Methodist Church found Bibles destroyed, equipment damaged, and their cross pulled down when they opened the church doors.

Police are currently investigating the incident as both a high-value burglary and a hate crime.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said in a statement, “the church is a beautiful and diverse part of the community and our sacred spaces deserve respect and veneration.”

According to a report by the Family Research Council, Fowler UMC is one of many churches that have been attacked in recent months.
