A Florida judge has struck down a law that prohibited Medicaid from covering puberty blockers and transgender surgeries for minors.

The judge ruled that “Medicaid beneficiaries are entitled to payment as a matter of medical necessity.” He said that the Florida ban violates multiple laws against sex-based discrimination.

The decision came as two trans-identifying adults and two minors sought Medicaid coverage for their needs.

Florida’s ban was initially based on a Florida Agency for Health Care Administration review in 2022. The agency announced back then that trans procedures were “not consistent with generally accepted professional medical standards” and could lead to “harmful long-term effects.”
