The war on words is not just in the states, but in Ireland as well. Tuesday, Irish Green Party Senator Pauline O’Reilly defended a new bill which could lead to the jailing people for criticizing gender identity.
She then suggested that Irish citizens should not be free to disagree with people’s identities, warning that this “discomfort” is a severe hazard. Some have compared the bill to the Orwellian idea of punishing people for “thought crime.”
The bill states that a person can be imprisoned even if they just have materials that are “likely to incite violence or hatred against a person or group on account of their protected characteristics.” One of these “protected characteristics” is “gender identity.”
But the bill is seeing pushback. The Catholic Herald noted that the legislation could lead to criminalizing Christian teaching and religious expression in general.
