President Biden says the U.S.-India relationship has never been stronger after a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. But the diplomacy was overshadowed by human rights concerns.

The president and prime minister nonetheless announced several high-profile business deals, such as letting General Electric become a partner in producing jet engines for Indian aircrafts.

Biden described relations with India as “more dynamic than ever.” And the Prime Minister told a joint session of Congress that the whole world grows as India grows.

Modi is accused of allowing widespread attacks and discrimination against Muslims and other minorities. Yet both leaders insisted multiple times that India is committed to preserving human rights.

More than 70 lawmakers wrote to Biden ahead of the visit, asking him to raise concerns about an erosion of religious, press, and political freedoms in India.
