Illinois is seeing a first-of-its-kind law concerning books in libraries. Gov. JB Pritzker signed a bill that will cut off funding from libraries that remove books based on “partisan or doctrinal” disapproval.

This comes as conservative states like Florida are banning specifically sexually explicit and graphic material from younger classrooms and libraries.

Parents in Illinois were trying to do the same, specifically over a book called “Gender Queer” which contained graphic sexual drawings.

But Pritzker and other supporters of the new bill say this is about allowing access to diverse voices and ideas.
