House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s struggle with Republican hardliners might be coming to a close.

Eleven House Republicans, mostly members of the House Freedom Caucus, have been in a stalemate with McCarthy ever since he made a deal with President Joe Biden on the debt ceiling.

Last week, Freedom Caucus members started holding up legislation backed by Republican leadership, creating a major blockade for the party.

But Monday, those Republicans agreed to open the floor after sitting down with McCarthy to work out a deal. They emerged from the meeting without an agreement but were encouraged by the conversation.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) said the plan is to renegotiate the promises McCarthy made to House conservatives as a condition to become Speaker.

According to The Hill, the Freedom Caucus wants McCarthy to “hold a harder line” in future spending fights. Gaetz is threatening to close the floor again if their demands aren’t met.
