South Korea celebrated the 50th anniversary of the largest evangelistic outreach in the nation’s history by inviting evangelist Franklin Graham to honor his father.

On June 3, 1973, the late Billy Graham stood before a crowd of 1.1 million South Koreans. It was the final event during a five-day crusade that reached an estimated 3.2 million people, the largest crowd to whom the elder Graham ever spoke.

That event, which featured 75,000 decisions for Christ, is said to have changed the spiritual climate for the whole nation. More than 10% of the population is now Christian.

To celebrate, the younger Graham returned to repeat his father’s simple message.

This time, 70,000 people filled the Seoul World Cup Stadium to listen to the message. While the number of decisions is unknown, Franklin says that many responded to an invitation to put their faith in Jesus Christ.
