A massive search is currently underway for a submersible that went missing on a trip to view the wreckage of the Titanic.

Five people were on board the tourist vessel. The support vessel lost communication with them on Sunday night, and the Canadian and U.S. Coast Guard are now working around the clock as part of the search. All available assets have been deployed.

The deepest under-water rescue the Coast Guard has accomplished so far has been to a depth of less than 2,000 feet. But if the vessel had already made it all the way to the Titanic wreckage on the ocean floor, that would be a rescue operation of almost 13,000 feet below the surface.

The situation is “dire” as the commercial vessel is not designed for long-range, multi-day excursions. But the Coast Guard is still considering it a search and rescue mission, meaning there is hope.
