A smoky haze from Canada’s wildfires continues to blanket the Northeast United States.

The fire has ravaged more than 9 million acres and displaced 20,000 Candians. But the effects are reaching far beyond the Canadian border, with the smoke reaching states as far south as the Carolinas.

Wednesday, New York City saw some of the worst air quality in the world as the city was covered in an eerie yellow haze. The city’s health commissioner warned everyone to stay indoors.

Meteorologists say the smoke will likely stay for the next few days.

The Weather Channel’s Jen Carfagno told CBS News that current wind patterns aren’t expected to shift until this weekend. But she did say there could be some rain before then – which would bring some temporary relief.
