Texas is looking to ramp up school security, with state lawmakers passing a new public school safety act on Sunday.
The bill requires an armed security guard to be on the grounds during regular school hours. School employees also must complete a “mental health first-aid training program.”
The bill was spurred on by last year’s shooting in Uvalde, where 19 elementary students and 2 teachers lost their lives.
The bill also seeks to prevent some of the policing mistakes made in response to the shooting. It requires law enforcement to test radio communications to make sure they are working properly.
Schools must also complete an annual security assessment.
Some Democrats voted against the bill, saying it will be a financial burden on schools. Others say it’s dangerous to put more weapons on campuses. The bill awaits Governor Greg Abbott’s signature.
