Palestine is urging the United Nations to suspend Israel’s membership unless it establishes a separate Arab state.
The comments were made yesterday on the traditional day of Nakba, or catastrophe. May 15 marks how 700,000 Palestinians fled when Israel was first created in 1948. But for the first time in 75 years, the U.N. also commemorated the day.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says it’s not enough.
He wants the U.N. and Israel to honor resolutions made in the 1940’s to give Arabs a separate state. He also wants Palestinian refugees to be allowed to return. These resolutions were notably made before the Arabs attacked Israel.
The nation also calls for trade sanctions and for the International Court of Justice to intervene.
Israel says the accusations are lies and a distortion of history, but Palestine has growing international support. Ninety countries voted in favor of honoring the day of catastrophe. This compares to the thirty who voted against it, including the U.S.
Meanwhile, both countries have lost a high number of civilians during their ongoing military conflict.
