West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Manchin is taking a stand against the EPA’s new fossil fuel regulations.

The EPA says the new rules will cut carbon emissions from coal plants and new gas plants by over 600 million tons by 2040. But it comes at major cost.

The energy industry would need to install billions of dollars in new carbon capture technology or switch to alternative fuel sources. Fossil-fuel-producing states, like West Virginia, say the plan could destabilize the electric grid.

Manchin called the plan extreme and said he will “oppose all EPA nominees until they halt their government overreach.”
