Lawyers for an IRS whistleblower reportedly met with congressional investigators on Friday to preview testimony in the Hunter Biden tax probe.
The whistleblower came forward in March with allegations that the Justice Department has deliberately interfered in the federal investigation into Hunter Biden in an attempt to shield the President Joe Biden and his family from scrutiny.
Attorney Mark Lytle in April sent a letter to House and Senate committee leaders stating that he represented an unnamed IRS criminal supervisory special agent who was prepared to make “protected whistleblower disclosures to Congress.” Lytle said his client had information about alleged political interference in the years-long probe into Hunter Biden on allegations of tax fraud, money laundering, and lobbying law violations.
Specifically, the whistleblower claims that a Biden administration political appointee has deliberately blocked Delaware U.S. Attorney David Weiss’s ability to bring charges in the case. CNN reported that a source with knowledge of the matter confirmed that the appointee is Attorney General Merrick Garland.
GARLAND’S CONGRESSIONAL TESTIMONY CALLED TO QUESTION
Days after the IRS whistleblower came forward, the House Ways and Means Committee authorized Lytle and another attorney to gather information about what their client witnessed at the federal tax agency as it relates to the Hunter Biden investigation which they disclosed in Friday’s meeting.
“The process is proceeding on a bipartisan basis with ranking member [Mike] Crapo’s staff,” Senate Finance Chair Ron Wyden’s (D-OR) spokesperson, Ryan Carey, told CNN.
The congressional investigation of the whistleblower’s claims comes as the window for Weiss to make a decision on whether to bring charges against the president’s son is about to close.
If the whistleblower’s allegation proves accurate, it would contradict Attorney General Merrick Garland’s previous testimony before Congress that he gave Weiss, a Trump appointee, complete authority to decide whether to prosecute Hunter Biden.
Garland denied the allegations at a White House Press briefing last Tuesday, Breitbart reported, despite refusing to appoint special counsel to establish a degree of separation between the ongoing investigation and President Biden.
Responding to a reporter’s question about whether the federal “investigation would be conducted without any kind of political interference,” Garland said he stood by his prior testimony.
“It’s still the case. I stand by my testimony,” he said. “And I refer you to the U.S. attorney from the district of Delaware who is in charge of this case and capable of making any decisions he feels is appropriate.”
PRESIDENT BIDEN SAYS HUNTER DID ‘NOTHING WRONG’
Hunter Biden has denied wrongdoing and the president defended his son during an interview with MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle that aired on Friday.
“First of all, my son has done nothing wrong. I trust him. I have faith in him,” Biden said. “It impacts my presidency by making me feel proud of him.”
The White House has said that the president is committed to an investigation “free from any political interference.”
“President Biden has made clear that this matter would be handled independently by the Justice Department, under the leadership of a U.S. Attorney appointed by President Trump, free from any political interference by the White House. He has upheld that commitment,” White House spokesman Ian Sams told reporters last month, per NBC News.
HOUSE REPUBLICANS TEASE ‘NEW INFO’ IN BIDEN FAMILY CORRUPTION PROBE
House Oversight Committee Republicans have suggested that the whistleblower revelations further implicate the president in their probe into alleged Biden family corruption.
Breitbart reported that a witness who testified before the grand jury was reportedly asked to identify the “big guy” referenced in documents found on Hunter Biden’s laptop who received a cut of the proceeds from the Biden family’s transnational business ventures. Republicans have long said that the “big guy” is none other than the president himself.
Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) will hold a press conference on Wednesday evening, promising “new info” exposing “the Biden family’s influence peddling to enrich themselves.”
