Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has taken another step on her slow journey toward potentially indicting former President Donald Trump.
As first reported by CNN, Willis has offered immunity to at least eight of the people who have been accused of attempting to pose as electors and give Georgia’s votes to Donald Trump in 2020. It is an offer that appears to have been accepted.
The revelation was contained in a court filing that came in response to a Willis effort to get an attorney booted from the case for an alleged conflict of interest.
“The District Attorney’s Motion is reckless, frivolous, offensive, and completely without merit,” wrote Kimberly Burroughs Debrow, who represents 10 “fake” electors and is the person Willis wants to be removed.
While the attorneys will no doubt continue to quibble over the propriety of Debrow’s service, it’s irrefutable that an immunity deal has the potential to lead to more legal headaches for former President Trump.
According to the filing, numerous of the fake electors have sat or will sit for an interview with Willis or her staff.
CNN reports that Willis alleges that some of the electors have begun incriminating one another, but it is not yet known if they incriminated the former president.
Willis has spent years investigating whether Trump committed a crime when he tried to have Georgia’s election overturned in 2020.
Trump has always maintained his innocence, typically through lengthy and insult-filled posts. He has stated that Willis is a racist and that all of his actions, including a January 2021 phone call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger during which Trump asked Raffensperger to help him “find 11,780 votes,” were legal.
Friday on Truth Social, Trump, who only recently returned from a trip to Scotland and Ireland, posted only a short general message about his collective legal troubles.
“All of these Fake Prosecutions are merely being done to Interfere with, and Influence, our Elections,” Trump wrote. “It is a dangerous time in America!!!”
In addition to Georgia, Trump faces potential federal charges relating to Jan. 6, and he’s already facing felony charges in Manhattan.
