It appears the Georgia district attorney who has investigated allegations that former President Donald Trump interfered with the state’s electoral process in 2020 is primed to indict.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has been clearing the stage, both in the figurative and physical sense, for a potential Trump preceding sometime in August.
Willis has asked judges in the county not to schedule trials and in-person hearings in the first half of August and has announced some 70% of her staff will begin working remotely during the same timeframe.
These factors have led observers to assume Willis wants to make an arraignment, one that will necessarily feature the Secret Service and horde of media, as seamlessly as possible.
“I respectfully request that judges not schedule trials and in-person hearings during the weeks beginning Monday, August 7 and Monday, August 14,” Willis wrote in a letter to judges, law enforcement, and elected officials. “If judges schedule [in-person] hearings during the post-conference days when my office will be working partially remote, senior leadership will handle those proceedings.”
Willis has been teasing charges against Trump for months. In early May, Willis offered immunity to more than a half dozen “fake electors.”
It remains unclear what charges Willis is considering for Trump, and the former president seems too caught up in myriad other legal battles to have given much specific thought to Willis in recent days.
On Truth Social, and in response to Harvard/Harris polling that shows Trump still well ahead of his competition in the race for the 2024 Republican nomination, Trump wrote “Great Poll Numbers, but the Communists are after me. Can’t let them succeed. MAGA!”
Trump has previously referred to Willis as a racist and has often questioned her integrity, but the former president views Willis primarily as part of a larger conspiracy against him.
“They Spied on my campaign, Rigged the 2020 Presidential Election, Weaponized the DOJ & FBI,” Trump wrote on Truth Social last week, “and yet they continue to go after me instead of the criminals that did all of these things, because I am fighting for you, and leading Biden, and everyone else, in the polls. It’s called Election Interference, and it is totally ILLEGAL!”
