In a sobering report, U.S. Customs and Border Protection says their processing facilities are already at capacity.
An anonymous Border Patrol agent in the San Diego sector says there’s no more room available. Migrants receive snacks and water from agents, but otherwise are forced to camp out while waiting for space to open up.
The situation is only expected to worsen after Title 42 expires on Thursday. The Biden Administration says they have plans in place to absorb the anticipated spike. This includes using 1,500 active-duty soldiers to essentially complete paperwork so processing times can be accelerated.
President Biden also plans to open up international processing centers away from the border to divert some of the foot traffic.
But Obama-era Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson says smugglers have already responded to the end of Title 42. Johnson predicted chaos after May 11.
The former secretary said back in 2019 that he considered 1,000 illegal immigrants coming across the border to be a crisis. Meanwhile, the anticipated surge might grow to 14,000 daily border crossings.
