A bipartisan group of House members introduced a wide-sweeping immigration reform bill yesterday.
But the Dignity Act of 2023 is expected to get a lot of pushback from both members in both parties.
The bill grants legal work status to immigrants already in the U.S. through a new immigration status. Republican cosponsor Maria Elvira Salazar says this Dignity status what illegal immigrants truly want.
But the plan would also allow migrants to pursue citizenship after seven years. The Florida congresswoman will have to convince other Republicans who oppose citizenship pathways to compromise on this issue.
Meanwhile Democrat cosponsor Veronica Escobar will face similar fights with her party on border security investments, including additional ICE funding.
The bill also seeks to address the visa backlogs, slash wait times, and raise the annual green card cap.
