The subcommittee on the weaponization of the federal government will soon get the sworn testimony of one of the 51 intelligence officials who signed a letter in 2020 saying the Hunter Biden laptop story was the product of Russian misinformation.
Tuesday, as first reported by the Washington Examiner, former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell will be deposed.
Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) has led the call for Morell to explain how he and so many other intelligence officials came to declare the Biden laptop story as untrustworthy in October 20200, only days after the story was first reported by the New York Post.
Jordan made his initial request about a year ago, when Democrats still controlled the House and he was serving as ranking member on the House Judiciary Committee.
At that time, Jordan requested Morell to provide a voluntary statement via a transcribed interview.
“At best, the public statement was a reckless attempt by you and your co-signatories to erroneously opine about purported election interference,” Jordan wrote last April. “At worse — and more likely — the public statement was a deliberate and coordinated effort to mislead the American people about information relevant to the 2020 presidential election by invoking your national security experience to falsely suggest that the allegations about Hunter Biden were not based in fact.”
Now that Republicans have assumed control of the House, Jordan has added the element of a compelled deposition.
Perhaps owing to a preoccupation with the criminal trial of former President Donald Trump, Republicans have been almost totally silent on the pending deposition.
As of this writing, the only conversation in which conservative leaders have engaged centered on a CNN reporter’s choice of words when referring to the weaponization committee.
“New: Republicans on the so-called weaponization of the federal government are deposing Michael Morell, a former deputy CIA director, today, per sources,” CNN’s Melanie Zanona tweeted last week. “Morell was one of a dozen intel officials that suggested the Hunter Biden laptop story was part of a Russian disinfo effort.”
“So-called.” It’s the official name of the Committee!

The GOP Judiciary Twitter account responded, “‘So-called.’ It’s the official name of the Committee! The @Weaponization Committee uncovered evidence that the FTC wanted Elon Musk to reveal the names of journalists he was in communication with. Shouldn’t a journalist be concerned about the federal government doing that?”
Conservatives have long alleged the intelligence community, legacy media, and social media giants conspired to discredit the Biden laptop story so that it would not damage the electoral prospects of then-candidate Joe Biden.
