Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he did not force anyone to get the COVID-19 vaccine, while acknowledging the possible side effects of jab.

Like any modern bit of medical advancements, there are potential side effects in vaccinations. And there are people who’ve probably gotten very sick from vaccinations and the billions of people that have been vaccinated from COVID in the past few years,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a discussion with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier at University of Ottawa this week. “But there are far more people, obviously, who have died due to COVID — died from not getting vaccinated. The idea that people can fly in the face of science.”

The Prime Minister went on to say he respected individual choices about the vaccine.

Individuals are allowed to make their own choices. There may be all sorts of reasons why someone is hesitant to get vaccinated. But I make a distinction, and I always have, between someone choosing for personal reasons to choose not to get vaccinated and someone deliberately using misinformation to mislead and scare other people with so-called facts that aren’t facts at all that lead them to make a choice that endangers their lives and the lives of other citizens.

Trudeau said his responsibility during the pandemic was to make sure as many Canadians survived as possible and that vaccines would be needed to achieve that goal.

“And therefore while not forcing anyone to get vaccinated, I chose to make sure all the incentives and all the protections were there to encourage Canadians to get vaccinated and that’s exactly what they did,” he said.

Canada enacted some of the strictest COVID-19 policies in the Western world. The country’s vaccine requirement for cross-border truckers sparked a protest in Ottawa at the beginning of 2022. Trudeau enacted emergency powers to quash the protest, including freezing the trucker’s bank accounts and seizing their vehicles.
