South Carolina Republican Sen. Tim Scott announced an exploratory committee for a 2024 presidential campaign, adding to a growing field of challengers in the GOP primaries.

As explained by NPR, “An exploratory committee allows him to raise money that could then be transferred to an official presidential campaign.”

“I will never back down in defense of the conservative values that make America exceptional and that’s why I’m announcing my exploratory committee for President of the United States,” Scott said in a video announcement on Wednesday.

The Senator said his campaign would focus on religious freedom, defense against China, jobs, parental rights in education, border security, law enforcement, and pro-life issues.

Scott will have an uphill battle, should he officially decide to run. A recent poll, from South Carolina’s Winthrop University, shows Scott coming in 4th place in a home-state primary, with only 7% support.

Fox & Friends co-host Steve Doocy asked Scott how he plans to defeat Donald Trump, who is leading in most polls.

“What Americans want to see is a contrast between the radical left and the blueprint to ruin America and why our policies actually work. I believe that Psalms 139 tells us that we are all uniquely and fearfully made, that if we focus on our uniqueness, we focus on our path to where we are,” Scott replied.

He continued, “I believe we give the voters a choice so that they can decide how we move forward as opposed to trying to have a conversation about how to beat a Republican. I think we’re better off having a conversation about beating Joe Biden.”

Scott would become the fifth person running for the GOP presidential ticket were he to announce his candidacy. Currently Donald Trump, Nikki Haley, Vivk Ramaswamy, and Asa Hutchinson are the only ones who have officially announced that they are running, though it is believed that many others, including Scott, will soon join the field.
