In the first trial of its kind, a meme has landed a man with a guilty verdict for election interference.
A New York City jury found Douglass Mackey guilty for memes shared before the 2016 election. Mackey, who uses the Twitter handle Ricky Vaughn, shared images encouraging Hillary Clinton voters to skip the poll lines by texting in their votes instead.
The man defended himself by saying he was just trying to create a viral meme and had seen similar ones targeting Trump voters.
But Assistant U.S. Attorney Turner Buford said it was about “vaporizing votes, making them disappear.”
The Department of Justice claims the fake campaign ads were released just one week before election date to purposely mislead voters.
The case has led to more accusations of a politicized DOJ. Conservative Pundit Tucker Carlson noted that actress Kristina Wong tweeted a similar meme naming Trump instead of Clinton.
Meanwhile, Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene has defended Mackey from what she believes is a concerning attack on free speech.
