The federal government isn’t liking Tennessee’s latest decision to ban sex-change treatments for minors, and is suing the state over it.
Starting on July 1st doctors in the state will be barred from prescribing hormonal treatments or scheduling surgery for children under the age of 18.
The DOJ say it breaks equal protection laws by “allowing non-transgender minors access to the same or similar procedures.” They say it strips minors their rights to make medical treatment decisions.
The bill passed with bipartisan support in the state citing that a majority of children grow out of gender dysphoria.
Governor Bill Lee called the lawsuit a federal overreach. He said the state is “committed to protecting children from permanent, life-altering decisions.”
